Congress defends President Patil posing with AK-47

The Congress on Tuesday disagreed with the criticism of President Pratibha Patil for posing for a photograph in Jammu and Kashmir with an AK-47 gun, saying it was an effort to boost the morale of the armed forces.
"The President of India is the supreme commander of the Indian Armed Forces... what she did was aimed at boosting the morale of the forces who perform an onerous function in difficult circumstances," AICC spokesperson Manish Tewari told reporters.
He was responding to a query on National Conference chief Omar Abdullah criticising the President for posing for the photograph, saying the First Citizen should have been seen in photographs with children in some far-flung hamlet rather than "brandishing" the "object that has caused so much death and destruction over the last 18 years" in the state. Patil was photographed on Saturday holding a gun while visiting a forward post in Jammu and Kashmir during her five-day visit to the state.
