The elusive and enigmatic Tabu is living life queen-size in Hyderabad. Far from the Bollywood bustle, the choosy actress has been turning down offers from topnotch banners, opposite the likes of Amitabh Bachchan and Rahul Bose. Tabu refused Shoojit Sircar’s Shoebite and Sanjay Chhel’s Maan Gaye Mughal-e-Azam. But it doesn’t mean that she is saying no to every offer that comes her way. Tabu will soon be seen in a comedy film, Seasons Greetings. It’s a segmented multi-story film. Although Seasons Greetings is light and frothy it also takes a deep look at the nature of suburban relationships. The film will be directed by Fight Club director Vicky Chopra. According to those close to Tabu, she is now deliberately seeking roles that bring out the lighter side of her personality. “Enough of those rona dhona and stern roles for Tabu. She now wants to have fun,” says a source.

Three arrested for killing of two Indian students in LSU
HOUSTON: Three African-American youths have been arrested for the brutal slaying of two doctoral students from Andhra Pradesh at the Louisiana State University campus in December last year.
Michael Jermaine Lewis, 19, and Casey Gathers, 20 were arrested on Thursday for the December 13 killing of Chandrasekhar Reddy Komma and Kiran Kumar Allam who were found shot in the head in what police called a home invasion of Allam’s apartment.
Devin Jamell Parker, 19, was arrested on Wednesday in an unrelated simple robbery and booked into prison, Gary Durham, acting Chief of the LSU police department, said at a press conference held to announce the arrests.
All the three men, hailing from Baton Rouge, will be charged with two counts of first degree murder.
Komma, 31, was a biology student from Kurnool, and Allam, 33, was a chemistry student from Hyderabad. The shootings shocked the Indian student community in the US and sparked fears of their safety.
A multi-agency task force which included the FBI had been formed to crack the sensational case and police had released sketches of two black men seen in the apartment complex where the students were murdered and a description of what was believed to be the getaway car.
Investigators said the probe is on-going and they will not comment until more information is gathered and the suspects have been completely interviewed.
“We are not going to discuss any evidence or answer further questions today [Thursday] regarding the case,” said Durham, adding the focus is now on prosecuting these individuals several agencies involved in the task force investigating the slayings were present at the news conference.
“On behalf of the entire LSU family, I want to say how grateful I am that arrests in this case have been made. I want to thank the LSU police department and all of the members of the task force for their unwavering dedication and diligence to solve this case,” LSU acting chancellor William Jenkins said.“Additionally, I want to reassure all LSU students, especially our international students and their families, that campus safety remains our top priority and that we have a strong and continuous commitment to safety on our campus,” he said.

The City police are perplexed after hearing the news of Mustaq Sharief's death on Thursday.
Incidentally, hours after Soundar was arrested Mustaq is no more. According Hoskote police, Mustaq died following a heart attack while travelling in his car near Yeshwanthpura in Tirum Shetty Halli police station limits. It is learnt that at around 8:20 am, Mustaq left home along with Giddu Sardar, Ansar, Nazar and Kurabara Babu towards his mango grove near Malur. After travelling a kilometre Mustaq reportedly complained of chest pain and died. All the four accomplices are said to be on the run. His family got a postmortem done.They buried the body at his home town Kattigenahlli. A senior office confessed that with Mustaq’s death the investigation has reached a dead end. Besides, Soundar uttering only Mustaq's name and not revealing anything further, things have become quite complicated. Sources said that excise officials are well aware of Mustaq's connections as he was into the business for more than two decades. Mustaq’s association with bootleggers at Kattigenhalli and Bylanarasapura in Hoskote taluk and his nexus with Adegara Kallahalli in Anekal are an open secret. According to sources in Hoskote, the highly influential illicit liquor lobby backed by politicians may have had a hand in Mustaq’s death.

Starlet, Navy officer held for killing TV producer
Mumbai: A 27-year-old Kannada film actress and her boyfriend, a naval officer, have been arrested for the sensational murder of a senior official of a Mumbai television production company.
The actress, Monika Susayraj, popularly known as Marria, was arrested from Mumbai and the naval officer, Lieutenant M L Jerome Mathew, was nabbed from Kochi in Kerala.
Mathew is currently attached as an aeronautical engineer with the Kochi Naval Base, Kerala, Mumbai's joint police commissioner Rakesh Maria announced on Wednesday evening.

Jaipur blasts suspect held in Delhi
NEW DELHI: A man suspected to be involved in the Jaipur serial blasts, which killed over 60 people and injured more than 200, was arrested here late Wednesday, police said. The militant, whose identity was not revealed, was nabbed from Chelmsford Road, the stretch leading to New Delhi Railway Station from Connaught Place, at around 8:30 pm. The arrest by Delhi Police's Special Cell came following a tip off from intelligence agencies. "There was an intelligence input that a militant is coming to Delhi," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Alok Kumar told reporters. Kumar refused to provide the identity of the militant or where he came from. "We have just started interrogating him. We cannot reveal everything now," he added. The militant's arrest here comes in the backdrop of serial blasts in the Pink City last week.

SRK’s Knight Riders will need more than a miracle

Calcutta: The Rajasthan Royals have been on a roll in the Indian Premier League. At the Eden on Tuesday, they steamrolled. The six-wicket victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders confirmed their semi-final berth.
Korbo, lorbo, jeetbo re has been a fading anthem for long and after their seventh loss in the tournament on Tuesday it sounded almost farcical. The Kolkata Knight Riders’ hopes are fading fast as they dug themselves a little deeper into a hole with 10 points from 12 matches. Technically though, they are still in with a chance of progressing in the tournament if they win the remaining two matches.
Once Ajit Agarkar gave away 16 runs in his first over, the stage was set for the burial. Umar Gul brought some cheer with two wickets in the next over, Wriddhiman Saha’s brilliant diving effort sending back Graeme Smith. But that was only a flicker of hope.
The Rajasthan Royals, pegged back slightly in their chase at 69 for four in the 10th over, carried on gallantly through Mohammed Kaif (34 off 31 balls) and Yousuf Pathan (48 off 18 balls). Once Sourav Ganguly gave away 17 runs in the 12th over, the curtain had been drawn. The visitors never looked back.
Pathan, who hit five fours and three sixes, took the fight out of the opposition with a brutal innings. It ended all lingering hopes for the Knight Riders. The unbroken fifth wicket pair added 81 runs in 40 balls.
Something seemed to be amiss at the Eden on Tuesday evening. This was like Diego Maradona without his No. 10 jersey or Roger Federer missing from Wimbledon action. The rumour doing the rounds since afternoon that Shah Rukh Khan would give this match a miss turned out to be true.
If that was not enough, the injured Shoaib Akhtar was forced to sit out. After a prolonged discussion it was decided that Gul would play. The Knight Riders, having already been pushed to the wall, needed an inspirational performance at the top of the order to find the right momentum.
The modest crowd turnout in comparison to previous matches, though, could have been prompted by the uncertain weather. Shane Warne also didn’t wish to take any chances, preferring to chase a target in the event of a curtailed match.
The Knight Riders needed a solid contribution from either Sourav or David Hussey, two of their most consistent performers, to set the ball rolling. Salman Butt provided the first ray of hope when he seemed to carry on with his form from the previous game.
Butt (24 in 20 balls) doesn’t bat in the conventional Twenty20 mode but has still been successful. Relying more on his conventional cricketing instincts, his 33-run stand in 30 balls with Sourav for the second wicket had things going in the right direction.
Sourav (32 in 34 balls) was circumspect at the start. He was his usual self once he settled down, picking Warne for special treatment. Shielding Hussey from the wily leg-spinner, he took the responsibility of carrying the momentum.
Mind games were also being played out in the middle, Warne delaying the deliveries to upset the batsman’s rhythm, especially when Sourav was on strike, by changing field placings and interacting with teammates.

Former Miss India Natasha faces defamation case
Mumbai, May 19: A gym owner here has filed a defamation case against model and former Miss World Natasha Suri in connection with a copyright dispute over her photographs, which he had clicked at his own expense and compensated her for it by paying money. Suri, who won the Femina Miss India-World 2006, had sent a legal notice to Nitin Gupta, owner of SYKZ Gym, and Haider Khan, a private fashion photographer, alleging they had misused her photographs in a hoarding that was used to promote weight loss programme of the gym. She had alleged that the words accompanying the ad, "May every loser Win", depicted her in bad light and portrayed her as a loser. Natasha had objected to the advertisement put up by the gym at prominent locations here and claimed Rs one crore as damages and professional fees. However, Gupta and Khan`s advocate, Rizwan Siddiquee, in a reply to the notice, said, "Nitin Gupta legally holds perpetual and complete rights over Natasha Suri`s photographs that were taken entirely at his cost and expenses to promote the services offered by his organisation." Section 17 of Indian Copyright Act 1957 further confirms the rights of my client, he said. Section 17 says that in case of a photograph taken, or a painting or portrait drawn, or an engraving or a cinematograph film made, for valuable consideration at the instance of any person, such person shall, in the absence of any agreement to the contrary, be the first owner of the copyright. NEW DELHI: The results of the Class XII examination conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will be announced on May 21 and 23, while the results Indian School Certificate Examination (ISCE) will come out on Tuesday. While the results for the Chennai, Ajmer and Panchkula regions will be announced on May 21, those for Delhi, Guwahati and Allahabad regions will be out on May 23, according to a release from the CBSE. A total of 5,48,815 students had appeared for the exams that were held from March one. The results of the CBSE exams will be put up on the website: cbseresults.nic.in. The results of the ICSE Exams will be released on the internet at three pm on Tuesday, according to a press release issued by the Council. The ICSE exams had begun on February 29. The results may be accessed from any of the facilitations indicated on the website www.cisce.org.

Vacant police posts affecting security: PM
New Delhi: Taking a wide-angle view of the security scenario in the wake of last week’s terror attacks in Jaipur as well as the Naxalite menace, the Prime Minister has said that inadequate police strength in states impedes the detection and prevention mechanism. After talking about India’s intelligence network facing new challenges from tech-savvy terror merchants, Manmohan Singh expressed concern that several states had failed to maintain the sanctioned strength of police force. This was among the concerns highlighted by TOI in a series of reports in August-September last year following the Hyderabad blasts. Singh expressed dissatisfaction over posts lying vacant. "Many states do not have in place the sanctioned strength of police. This is affecting the security scenario," he told reporters at Bagdogra airport after a visit to Bhutan on Saturday. As on January 1, 2007, the existing police strength in India stood at 14.1 lakh, although the sanctioned strength is 15.7 lakh, which works out to 143 cops per one lakh population. It is also common knowledge that in India, the number of policemen for law and order and security-related duties gets reduced substantially as a sizeable chunk gets assigned to protect VVIPs. According to figures available with the Bureau of Police Research and Development, the percentage of vacant posts in case of armed police was more (13.8%) compared to that of civil police (9.8%). The actual strength of civil police at the end of 2006 stood at 10,91,899 against a sanctioned strength of 12,09,904. Maharashtra had the highest number of civil police with 140,089 personnel, followed by UP, which had 119,893 policemen. As against the nearly 11 lakh civil police, strength of armed police stood at 314,122. UP has the highest contingent of armed police (33,400), followed by Assam (23,708) and Madhya Pradesh (21,607). Only in four northeastern states — Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura — was the strength of armed cops more than that of civil police.

Police have claimed to have ''ample evidence'' that teenaged school student Arushi was killed by her family's murdered domestic help Hemraj or a former servant even as post-mortem reports said both were done to death in a similar manner using the same weapon around the same time.''We have got ample evidence and proof that there is involvement of a domestic help - either servant or an ex-domestic help - because the entire process of entry and murder proves one fact that the person was very well conversant with the topography of the (Talwars') house'', Senior Superintendent of Police A Satish Ganesh said.Police sources said they were zeroing on domestic help theory on the basis of fingerprints of four to five persons obtained in the room of Hemraj.Efforts were being made to match the fingerprints with those of the deceased servant's kins and former domestic helps of the Talwar family.Ganesh said the Talwars had engaged seven to eight domestic helps in the last five years.However, police are yet to get any clue as to why Hemraj was murdered and by whom.According to a police, the post-mortem report of both 14-year-old Arushi and Hemraj said that both of them were murdered in a similar manner using the same weapon at around same time.Police questioned a compounder of Arushi's dentist parents Rajesh and Nupur Talwar and the son-in-law of Hemraj in connection with the double murder.

However, the Nareepol Tree is almost certainly nothing more than a hoax. If such an amazing phenomenon was real, the tree would undoubtedly be quite famous and there would be many media reports published about it all around the world. The scientific community and religious groups would also have examined the tree and published their findings. Instead, the only information about the alleged Nareepol Tree is in versions of the above message.Moreover, the three photographs above appear to be the only images of the tree available. Given the self-publishing power provided by the Internet, if the tree was real, there would surely be myriad photographs of the tree available on many different blogs, travel websites and photo sharing websites.According to the message, the Nareepol Tree is located in the Petchaboon province. So, if the tree and its fruit really existed, it would likely be a major tourist attraction for the region and promoted as such. Except for the positioning of the arms, each piece of "fruit" is virtually identical in size and colour. Melbourne:A 13-year-old boy from Texas has been convicted of fraud for hiring two hookers and racking up 30,000 dollars in charges on his father's credit card, it has emerged.
According to money.co.uk, Ralph Hardy confessed to ordering an extra credit card from his dad's existing credit card company and taking his pals on a spending spree after which they ended up playing Halo on an Xbox with the hookers in a Texas motel.
The 1000 dollars-a-night prostitutes were released without charge but Ralph was given a three-year community order upon his conviction on May 9, reports news.com.au.
The prostitutes told police they grew suspicious when the kids said they'd rather play Xbox than play with them.
Authorities were alerted to the motel by a delivery clerk who, after delivering supplies of Dr Pepper, Oreos and Fritos, was asked by the kids where they could hire some escorts.
They explained they'd just won big at a World of Warcraft tournament and wanted to relax.
The delivery clerk called the police who arrived to find 3,000 dollars in cash, electronic gadgets, an Xbox console and games, plus the two prostitutes.
Ralph reportedly told the officers his dad wouldn't mind, because he'd turned 13 the previous week and he'd forgot to get him a present.

Tuesday, May 13, 2008 (New Delhi)The President, Vice-President and the Prime Minister on Tuesday night strongly condemned the bomb blasts in Jaipur and appealed for calm.Condemning the attack, President Pratibha Patil appealed for peace and calm.Terming the blasts as ''despicable and dastardly acts'', Vice-President Hamid Ansari expressed his deepest sympathies to the families of those killed and injured in them. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who was briefed on the serial blasts that left several dead and scores injured, deplored the attack on innocent people.Singh assured all support to the Rajasthan government and assistance to the affected families, PM's Media Adviser Sanjaya Baru said in a statement.Congress President Sonia Gandhi also condemned the serial blasts in Jaipur, calling them a crime against humanity.Condoling the tragic loss of innocent lives in the serial blasts, Gandhi called the terror attacks a ''crime against humanity''.She appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony in this ''grave'' hour.
HuJI may be behind Jaipur blasts: Sources
13 May 2008, 2220 hrs IST,PTIJAIPUR: Terrorists struck for the first time in Jaipur triggering eight serial blasts in a span of 12 minutes on Tuesday evening in crowded market areas and near a Hanuman temple in the walled city leaving at least 60 killed and 200 injured. ( Watch ) "According to the information I have received 60 people have died and 150 have been injured," said Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, who rushed back to the State Capital from Jodhpur. Bangladesh-based Harkut-ul-Jehadi Islami(HuJI) is suspected to be behind the blasts that has taken the state authorities by surprise, Home Ministry sources said. The sources ruled out the use of RDX in the carefully orchestrated low-intensity explosions which were suspected to have been set off from cycles in areas including near Hawa Mahal which are frequented by domestic and foreign tourists. The blasts rocked Tripolia Bazar, where large number of devotees turned up at a Hanuman temple, Johari Bazar, Manas Chowk, Badi Choupal and Choti Choupal-- all located within a two-km radius in the old city. IG(Jaipur) Pankaj Singh said in all there were eight blasts, a couple of them in the same area. Police said one explosive was defused by bomb disposal squad near the Hanuman temple. Blood was splattered at the scene of the blasts which tossed some of the victims several feet up. The intelligence agencies have already started analysing STD and international calls made out of Jaipur during the last 48 hours.

IMPHAL, May 11 : The pass percentage of the Class XII examination, the results for which were announced today late evening by the Council of Higher Secondary Education, Manipur saw a marked improvement over the last four years by recording a pass percentage of 65.70 against the 56.66 pc recorded last year and the dismal 36.69 pc in 2004.Out of the total number of 14953 candidates who appeared for the examination, a total of 9824 candidates made it through the Class XII examination this year.In Arts stream Heigrujam Premkumar Singh of CC Hr Sec School secured the first position with a total of 402 with letter marks in Manipuri, Political Science and Education.The second spot was bagged by Lily Lalnunmawi of Sielmat Christian Hr Sec School, of Churachandpur. Reliance to use closed fuel outlets for malls and multiplexes

Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), India's biggest firm by market capitalisation, is drawing up plans to convert its fuel retail outlets, which were recently closed owing to unviable operations, into malls and multiplexes.
Earmarking about Rs 5,000 crore for the project, the company is planning to develop 700 to 800 properties at important locations. The company, which is promoted by Mukesh Ambani, has also approached its fuel dealers with offers to buy out the properties they own, said sources familiar with the developments.
"About 500 properties used for the fuel retail business are owned by the Mukesh Ambani group. The remaining outlets are dealer-owned and dealer-operated. The dealers, who were incurring losses due to suspension of the retail business, have approached the company to sell their properties," company sources said.
The company is believed to be offering Rs 2 crore to Rs 4 crore for the properties and petrol pumps owned by the dealers. An additional Rs 4 crore to Rs 6 crore will be spent to construct each mall and multiplex structure.
Reliance Industrial Infrastructure, a group company that was floated for in-house infrastructure construction, will be the developer of the properties.
Sources said all the Reliance Retail brands — Reliance Fresh, Reliance Footprint, Reliance Time Out, Reliance Digital, Reliance Wellness and Reliance Jewel — will find space in these malls.
For the multiplexes, the company is exploring the option of joint ventures with the founder of Adlabs Films Manmohan Shetty, Yash Raj Films and a few foreign media houses.
The company recently closed 1,432 petrol pumps after it incurred a Rs 800-crore loss in its petroleum retail business in 2007-08 on account of a growing gap between low, government-mandated prices of petrol and diesel and rising crude oil prices.
Declining to comment on the future strategy, an RIL spokesperson said, "We are being forced to suspend retail operations because of the lack of a level playing field."
The spokesman was referring to a subsidy paid to government-owned oil marketing companies, which dominate the business, to sell petroleum products below cost. RIL and other private fuel retail suppliers like Essar and Shell are not entitled to this compensation, which is paid through bond subscriptions, making their businesses unviable.
"Since the government cannot increase the fuel price of state-run companies for political reasons, RIL's suspension of fuel retail business will be akin to ending it altogether. So the company has to find another business tapping the existing land bank," said a Mumbai-based analyst.
The company recently struck a deal with Marks & Spencer (M&S) for which it might use these properties to fulfil its commitments to the iconic UK retailer. M&S plans to open at least 50 stores in India and become a leading brand in the country's $300 billion retail sector.

Army takes on militants in J&K, rescues five hostages

JAMMU: Security forces on Sunday stormed a house in Sambha district in Jammu region and rescued all the five hostages, including three women, from militants' clutches, official sources said.Intermittent firing was on between militants holed up in the under-construction house and security forces, the sources said.Militants struck in a big way on Sunday killing four persons, including a lensman of a leading state daily, and took two women hostage while engaging in a fierce encounter with security forces in Samba region in which one militant was gunned down.A group of heavily armed militants, who are believed to have infiltrated across the border after firing at a BSF post here on Friday, struck at the house of a local political leader Hoshiyar Singh, killing him and his wife Sheshi Balla in Kali Mandi forest belt around 0750 hours (IST), official sources said.As Army and BSF units rushed to the spot, a fierce encounter ensued in which Ashok Sodhi, a senior photojournalist with local English newspaper Daily Excelsior , who was covering the incident, was killed when a bullet fired by militants pierced his head, they said.A jawan identified as Atul died and four persons, including a major of the Territorial Army were injured in the encounter. One of the militants was also killed in the gunbattle.The militants, believed to be three to four in number, escaped from the spot and entered a house in a nearby village taking a woman and her daughter as hostage.Personnel belonging to the six Garhwal Rifles of the Army, BSF and police cordoned off the village and started a house-to-house search, the official said, adding that the operation was continuing."This is major encounter. Five persons including a militant have been killed. The operations is on", Inspector General of Police, Jammu range, K Rajendra told reporters.
Vajpayee displayed courage in giving nod to Pokhran II: Kalam

MUMBAI: Former President A P J Abdul Kalam was today all praise for the "courage" shown by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in deciding to go for Pokhran tests within weeks of assuming office in March 1998."Vajpayee gave us the permission within a week of assuming the political office, to establish India's expertise," Kalam said at a function at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the 'Shakti' series of tests at Pokhran in Rajasthan.Kalam, who had supervised the Pokhran-II explosions as the chief of the Defence Research and Development Organisation camping in the Thar desert for over a fortnight, said the testing was a "defining moment" in the country's history, next only to adopting the path of economic liberalisation in 1991.Another core member of the team that carried out five tests and then chairman of Atomic Energy Commission R Chidambaram reminisced, saying, "We recall the pleasure and excitement of May 11, 1998.It was just a coincidence that this day too was Buddha Purnima (just like the day on first test at Pokhran in 1974)." The BARC presented Kalam with a memento of a banyan tree bonsai which had a statue of a smiling Buddha under it at the function."The Buddha has smiled" was the code used by scientists in 1974 to declare that the nuclear test has been successful.Commenting on the memento, BARC Director S Banerjee quipped, "The smile on the Buddha's face means a lot of things."

Junta mints money as Myanmar starves

NEW YORK: While the international community was rushing aid to Myanmar for survivors of the last week’s devastating cyclone, its Government was exporting tons of rice through its main port, a media report said.In the report from Thilawa in Myanmar, the ‘Los Angeles Times’ said four of the five berths at the port for ocean-going container vessels were empty but a crane was loading large white sacks filled with rice into a freighter.It quoted drivers of at least 10 transport trucks waiting to deliver several tons of rice that were destined for Bangladesh.The regime, the paper said, has a monopoly on rice exports and had said this week that it planned to meet commitments to sell rice, whose price has reached record high in the world market, to countries such as Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, even though Myanmar’s main rice-producing region suffered the worst damage from the cyclone.The storm caused massive destruction in the Irrawaddy river delta, where farmers are now desperate for food. As rice was loaded onto the freighter, people in nearby villages were quoted as saying that the authorities had handed out rations of rotting rice, apparently from ruined stocks in the port’s massive warehouse.The storm soaked about 40 percent of the stored rice, worth millions of dollars, said the chief driver who, the paper said, did not want to be identified. India, Vietnam, China and Cambodia had curbed rice exports this year to ensure adequate supplies for their people amid a mounting world food crisis.
Armymen accused of rape in Ahmedabad
A woman working as a domestic help in the town's red light area was allegedly gangraped by three Armymen, police said on Sunday.In a complaint filed in the Kotwali police station on Sunday, the 42-year-old woman alleged that three Armymen assaulted and gangraped her in Bhagat Galli late on Saturday evening, they said.One of the three, identified as Venkatesh Venkaih Dwandvawadi (32) of the Armed Corps Centre and School was caught by locals while fleeing from the scene after the victim started crying for help, the police added.Meanwhile, a local NGO alleged that the police and Army personnel were pressurising the victim not to file a complaint on the night of the incident during which Venkatesh is suspected to have fled.The victim lodged a complaint against Venkatesh and two others on Sunday afternoon after being motivated by some activists.Police inspector Tukaram Mohile said the victim is not a prostitute and that she did household chores like cleaning and mopping for various brothel owners in the area. A search is on for the three accused and further investigations are on, he said.

Six citizens of India who were on their way to visit Niagara Falls were killed when their mini van spun out of control and was hit by an oncoming car on a Pennsylvania highway, police said on Sunday.Four of those killed worked at the Troy, Michigan-based Syntel Inc, an information technology company, and two were spouses of employees, company spokesperson Jonathan James said on Sunday.The mini van had just crossed the Pennsylvania-Ohio border on Saturday afternoon when it crossed the highway median and began flipping and rolling, coming to rest on its roof, authorities said.It was then struck by an oncoming westbound car, whose driver was treated at a hospital and released on Saturday night, said Kevin Havern, police official.The mini van driver Kaushik Deb, 26, of Troy, Michigan, in suburban Detroit died on impact. The passengers killed were Manoj Jharia, 35; Mili Jharia, 28; Nitin Agarwal, 29; Swati Agarwal, 25; and Shubham Choudory, 24. The Jharias and Aggarwals were married, police said.The sole survivor in the mini van, Nitin Gupta, 28, was sitting in the front passenger seat, Havern said. He was also treated and released from a hospital on Saturday.State police said they had not determined what caused the accident.Syntel has 27 offices and 12,000 employees worldwide and 2007 revenues of $ 337.7 million, according to its website.

N-deal in limbo, but full steam ahead on defence agreements

Delhi: The death knell may have been sounded for the Indo-US nuclear deal, with the equally contentious Logistics Support Agreement (LSA) already in cold storage, but both New Delhi and Washington are moving forward to ink two other crucial defence pacts. India has already forwarded its "detailed counter-draft" for the End-Use Verification Agreement (EUVA) to US, while the one for the Communication Interoperability and Security Memorandum of Agreement (CISMoA) will be sent within a month. "Both countries are eager to sign these two agreements as early as possible," said a government source on Sunday. The urgency to push through the two pacts is being shown because India is cranking up its defence procurements from US. After last year’s acquisition of large amphibious warship USS Trenton or INS Jalashwa for $49 million, for instance, India is now slated to induct six C-130J ‘Super Hercules’ aircraft under a $962.45 million deal. Moreover, India is also now in the final stages of clinching the around $2 billion contract for six Boeing P-8i long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft, with anti-submarine warfare capabilities. Then, there is the gigantic $10.4 billion project to procure 126 multi-role combat fighters for IAF, with US government aggressively hawking F/A-18 "Super Hornets" (Boeing) and F-16 "Falcons" (Lockheed Martin) for the deal. "We don’t have problems with safeguards when sensitive technology is being transferred to us, but we don’t want anything intrusive and unnecessary," said the source. India has an "unblemished" record in handling technology imported from abroad, without "third-party leakages" or "breaches of intellectual property rights", he added. Consequently, New Delhi has told Washington it does not want "on-site inspection" and "physical verification" under EUVA by American personnel of weapon systems and platforms bought from US. "We don’t think it’s necessary. There are also practical difficulties in producing systems for physical verification at the drop of a hat. Our counter-draft says we can give guarantees and access to records instead of actual on-site inspection," said the source. With CISMoA, US wants to enhance the ‘interoperability’ of its forces with the Indian ones, as also ensure secrecy of its C4ISR (command, control, communications, computer, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) systems. India has now virtually finalised its counter-draft on CISMoA, with inputs from Army, IAF, Navy and the integrated defence staff being incorporated into it. One aim is to protect against the possibility of any American software creeping into Indian C4ISR systems. While EUVA and CISMoA are in the pipeline now, the Left pressure on the UPA has made it abandon the LSA as of now. CPM leader Prakash Karat, incidentally, has described LSA as "far more dangerous than the civil nuclear deal" in its implications since the Left claims it will give the US access to Indian military bases.

More than 100,000 people may have been killed in the cyclone in Burma, a US diplomat said, citing information diplomats were receiving from the devastated Irrawaddy delta region of the Southeast Asian country.
"The information that we're receiving indicates that there may well be over 100,000 deaths in the delta area," said Shari Villarosa, the head of the US embassy in Burma.
State radio and TV, the main official sources for casualties and damage, reported an updated death toll of 22,980 with 42,119 missing and 1383 injured in Asia's most devastating cyclone since a 1991 storm in Bangladesh that killed 143,000.
Most of the victims were swept away by a wall of water from the cyclone that smashed into coastal towns and villages in the rice-growing delta southwest of Rangoon.
"We estimate upwards of one million people currently in need of shelter and life-saving assistance," Richard Horsey of the United Nations Office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs told Reuters in Bangkok. He added that 5,000 square km of the delta were under water.
Aid began trickling in today, but there were worries abroad over whether the country's ruling military junta would overcome its distrust of the outside world and open up to a full-scale international relief operation.
Thailand, China, India and Indonesia were flying in relief supplies and the US president and Australian prime minister appealed to the Burmese government to accept their assistance. France called for the UN Security Council to get involved.
The top UN humanitarian affairs official, John Holmes, said four Asian members of a UN disaster assessment team who do not need visas had received clearance to enter Burma tomorrow. A fifth non-Asian member is waiting for a visa.
Speaking at a news conference in New York, Holmes also called on Burma to waive visa requirements for aid workers.
Political analysts and critics of 46 years of military rule say the cyclone may have long-term implications for the junta, which is even more feared and resented since last September's bloody crackdown on Buddhist monk-led protests.

Britney Spears wins more time with sons
The lawyer representing Spears` ex-husband Kevin Federline in the extended legal wrangling told reporters the judge had extended her visitation rights, without providing details.
"We all see indicators of progress by Ms. Spears," Federline`s lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, told reporters after the closed door hearing, which heard a report on Spears by a mental health expert.
"What was a seemingly daily state of extreme flux has been stabilized," Kaplan said.
Spears, 26, turned up at court on time, demurely dressed in a brown polka-dot dress and cream cardigan, and accompanied by her parents. It was a striking contrast to weekly court sessions of a few months ago when she failed to appear or left abruptly.
Spears was stripped last October of legal and physical custody of Sean Preston, 2-1/2, and Jayden James, 20 months. She lost the right to visit them in January but Federline agreed in February that Spears could occasionally see the boys under supervision.
The singer has turned her life around in the past two months after a year of bizarre behavior and two brief hospitalizations in Los Angeles for psychiatric evaluation.
Spears` father Jamie Spears was granted control over her personal and business affairs in February, and the singer`s former self-styled manager and constant companion, Sam Lutfi, has agreed to a restraining order that keeps him away.
Spears won praise for a guest appearance on the TV sitcom "How I Met Your Mother" in March and is set to reprise her role as a office assistant on the show in May.
"We are so pleased at Britney`s progress and we are very appreciative of the court`s recognition of this progress," her parents said in a statement on Tuesday. Spears is due back in court in July for a further progress report.
The personal life of the former teen phenomenon, one of the most successful pop stars in the world in the early 2000s, spiraled out of control after her 2006 breakup with Federline.
She shaved her head, entered rehab, was ordered to take drug and alcohol tests and parenting classes, and was twice taken by ambulance to psychiatric units for treatment of what has been reported to be bipolar disorder.
Federline`s spokesman, Elliott Mintz, told reporters that Federline was pleased by Tuesday`s hearing. "At the end of this saga he is hoping and believing that there will be two children who are raised in the company of the two people who love them," Mintz said.

Juhi Chawla, long tagged as the original Miss Bubbly, has recently discovered her sporty side .
Her new avatar as a cricket buff and promoter has meant she is taking more interest in the game than ever before.
But, Juhi is a wee bit disappointed with her team Kolkata Knight Riders’ loss in the last few games. “It is a disappointment, but ups and downs are part of the game,” Juhi says with a smile. She is quick to add, “We got off to a flying start with McCullum’s century. The team is getting along well as a unit. There are no frictions in the team. Of course, now with some of the players leaving, the composition will change a bit.”
The last time Juhi watched a match in a stadium was while she was in college, but she confesses that her knowledge of the game has increased post-IPL. “I used to watch cricket in snatches at home on TV. Now, I have become much more familiar and can recognise a lot of players,” she says.
Moving away from cricket, Juhi is busy promoting her latest film. In between, she is catching up on her ad shoots. “Also coming up is Kismat Konnection, where I have a guest appearance,” says Juhi. So, have priorities changed for her over the years? “Surely they have, with age. Previously, I was running around trees, but now every film has a different requirement. Now I first see the production house, and then who is directing it. The script is another concern. Earlier, most of the scripts were written on the sets,” says Juhi.
The moment we mention kids, Juhi’s face lights up. “Oh, they take up much of my time. But, it is nice to be around them,” she says. And, have they watched any of her films? “Shockingly enough, my kids haven’t watched any of my films. We have no TV culture at home,” she laughs.
