Osama bin Laden hiding in Hindu Kush: United States

New York, Mar 15 (ANI): Worlds biggest manhunt for Al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden has zeroed in on Chitrals stunning peaks and valleys. According to the New York Daily News, Laden is somewhere in the impenetrable Hindu Kush mountains in Pakistans Chitral region.
The region has been sealed off to outsiders and is now regularly buzzed by American spy drones. Many foreign officials also confirmed that Laden has been seen around the Hindu Kush mountains. Recent Predator fly-bys, Ladens tapes and interviews are pointing his appearance to these vast mountains.
The reports suggest that the nearby town of Kalam can also be his current home place.
In fact, drones were first spotted spying on Chitral last summer and were seen again as recently as February 2. It is so far from US-run airfields that drone sorties are limited to just a few hours due to fuelling issues, the report said. (ANI)
Osama bin Laden could be in Pak trekker paradise Chitral:
USWashington, Mar.15 (ANI): New investigation undertaken by a New York-based daily reveals that Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden could be ensconced in Pakistans trekker paradise of Chitral. The area has been declared out of bounds for outsiders and is now regularly buzzed by American spy drones.
The U.S. won”t say it officially, but an exhaustive investigation by the New York Daily News has zeroed in on Chitral’’s stunning peaks and deep valleys for the man responsible for the deaths of over 3,000 people on September 11, 2001.
Six U.S. and foreign officials confirmed to The News that northwestern Pakistan’’s impenetrable Hindu Kush mountains - which boast some of the world’’s tallest climbs - in the Chitral region have been eyed as Bin Laden’’s hideout since 2006 by Osama hunters aiming for the big kill.
A lengthy review of evidence, including recent Predator fly-bys, Bin Laden’’s tapes since 9/11 and interviews with three dozen experts on Al Qaeda, Pakistan and special operations, point to these vast mountains as the terror chief’’s most likely haven.“Debriefings of Al Qaeda leaders arrested confirmed this,” said Rohan Gunaratna, author of “Inside Al Qaeda.”Two senior foreign officials said the nearby town of Kalam also is suspect.
Drones were first spotted spying on Chitral last summer and were seen again as recently as Feb. 2. Chitral is so far from U.S.-run airfields that drone sorties are limited to just a few hours because of fueling issues.
CIA Director Leon Panetta has told Congress he asks “every day” where Bin Laden is hiding.Reports of his location were rare after he escaped a U.S. onslaught in Afghanistan in 2001.
The News has revealed that only four of his tapes were ever recorded in the harsh winter months from January to March.
Most were made in the fall, and no tapes were recorded in winter after 2003 until a year ago.Experts say this is a new clue, which may mean he lives so high up he’’s snowbound in winter - safer from attack but unable to dispatch couriers on foot with his screeds.
Chitral “is a natural route from Afghanistan” into the Hindu Kush, observed an ex-operative in “Alec Station,” the CIA’’s Bin Laden unit.
The jagged range of sharks teeth peaks has always been a sanctuary for brigands lying low.Chitral is 300 miles north of the Waziristan tribal belt U.S. drones have bombed 39 times since June.
But last month, Predators were over peaceful Chitral - no missiles have ever been fired there - for the fifth occasion since August.
Some intelligence officials downplay Chitral’’s importance or argue that Bin Laden is in a teeming Pakistani city similar to ones where his aides were nabbed after 9/11 - even though Al Qaeda leaders moved to the tribal areas years ago, where eight top goons have been assassinated in recent months. (ANI)
Pakistan rejects claim of Osama Bin Laden hiding inside its territory
Islamabad, Feb.25 (ANI): Pakistan has rejected claims that Al-Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden has taken refuge inside its territory.
A member of the National Assembly (NA), Sajid Hussain
Turi, referring to a report which claimed that Laden was most likely hiding in the town of Parachinar in Kurram Agency, said that it was impossible for Laden to seek refuge in an area dominated by an anti-militant population.
I strongly contradict the report, as Parachinar is completely different from other tribal areas with the majority of the population being Shias, community who are known as anti-Taliban, The Dawn quoted Turi, as saying.
Turi, who represents Kurram Agency in the National Assembly, said both Sunni and Shia communities were against any terror activities in the region.
Earlier, US geographer, Thomas Gillespie of the University of California-Los Angeles, suggested that Osama might be hiding in one of three compounds in Parachinar, a town 12 miles from the Afghan border.Gillespie based his conclusion on night-time satellite readings and on public reports of Osamas habits and whereabouts. FAREWELL MY FRIEND, MY BROTHER

By Lealyan Thawmte
This is a tribute to a friend. A brother. A relative. And a man. To me, like no one I'd known. To others, he may well be unknown. But he'd overcome poverty and hardships. From helplessness and hunger and despair. To feed and looked after his wife, son and daughter. With resources so limited. To survive. From the harsh realities of being from a poor and underpriviledged family in Lamka, and who had been born there. Even though his parents were one of the first setllers in Hiangtam Lamka, life was not easy for him. Still, he'd managed to take his own family to Delhi when he wrote himself into the Ministry of Defence more than 20 years ago.

The first memories of me meeting him was way back in the late 80's. Though he had already finished his matriculation, further studies were apparently not his forte. He hung on to that CBSE certificate. Hoping one day something will turn up. Something did turn up. Back then was a Church at Appollo Veng run by the EAC- which is still there. He had just married and since he was a member of the church - he got a job at the EAC run school as a Teacher-cum-Chowkidar. As the Church and the primary school shares the same compound. Pay. Rs.400 per month. Imagine.

He maintained the compound of the school and the Church while teaching under privileged students at the EAC school - then known as T.E. Paul School. His quarter was like a a small hut inside of the compound which he shared with his wife and son. You enter into a kitchen and dining area, and the other half is their bedroom. That's where I first met him. Through my wife Thangie Thomte. Who'd also used to volunteer and work at the school. I had went there for an ocassion or something..I do not remember. But I still rememberered the hospitality, warmth and love I felt at that small hut like cabin. I felt at home.

They had, inspite of their situation and hardships, prepared 'bawngke rawt' and food to eat. I went there with my then girlfriend, now my wife. But I did come prepared with a bottle of whiskey. We drank, we talked we ate.. and I realised that he was very closely related to Thangie... and it was like I was with a family who do not say no to drinking, but more so to enjoying, get togethers and having fun. With no barriers. Remember I was still a known drug-addict then. Very. We rarely keep in touch. I should have. I did not. He has his responsibilities and I'd had my pre-occupations. And somehow we lost contact.

The next time I met him was in the 90's. In Delhi where he had now joined the MOD. When I’d found myself that I had wrote myself into the IFS Grade V/VI?.. don't remember... I had to report for duty at the MEA in New Delhi. I knew many people in Delhi, by name or mostly known to my father. But I did not know anyone really. I also knew the people I was supposed to know or call on - may not very well be accomodating considering my chequered past. So I’d arrived in Delhi, spent a night at a seedy Hotel in Paharganj. Then moved to Manipur Bhawan. I did dot get a room there. I stayed with the Manipur Rifles. Slept in their barracks in the basement.

That's when I looked into a small piece of paper. And his name. And number. Given to me the night before I left Lamka. I’d never called him. But somehow I found myself into his address a few days into Delhi. In Munirka. A 6x12 room. With now 2 of their children. Their rented accomodation was just a space, to eat and sleep. Cook. Eat. Clear up. Lay the mats. Sleep. Wake up. Roll up. Eat. And I threw myself in there. And they never complaint, said or more so... he never said that I was not welcome. Even when I have to share the floor aka bedroom 5-10 inches close to comfort. I stayed with them until I could find myself an accomodation of my own. They bore me for almost 4 months. He was a person who is the most unpretentious, unassuming, down to earth and as simple as they come that I’d ever known. He was polite, has a good word for everyone and even though his rented one room apartment was packed to the gills with 3 adults and 2 small kids, visitors would drop by almost every single day.

He was never serious about anything and if he was, he never showed it. Outside of his family. A couple of drinks would bring out the best in him and thats how we normally spent our evenings. And thats how I will now remember him. Him cooking dinner while I poured the drinks. Laughing. Joking. Life, taken the easy way. Worries. None. Future, in hands better than us mere mortals.

One thing I cannot forget about his character is his patience which I’d experienced it real close up. There was a time when a kind of revival in his Church in Delhi spawned some new young born agains into the faith. They were in full swing among their community, to counsel and preach the word of God to who they believed needed it. It was a weekly affair and he was a prime target. What with his drinking and all that. He had to be counselled and preached. He never said no. So, 2-3 of the new born would visit him regularly. He sat with them every single time into the wee hours of the morning while they tried to convince him. He would agree to everything they said. That he is a sinner. Yes. So true. He never disagreed with their interpretation of their faith.

But they never got the better of him. He would sit with them as long as they are prepared to stay. He would never argue a point or even put forward his opinions for debate even though he knew the Bible as much, if not more then them. It was a test of patience, endurance and persistence. And as I slept on the floor near to their counselling sessions I’d used to think -’Oh guys give up - you will never get him - he got you where he wants you. You will never win’. And I was right. After a few weeks of the late night counselling sessions, the new borns finally gave up. He was a tough nut to crack. Not that he did not believe in the faith. But more so he has a personality and character, defined back then when these kids were not even born.

Other than the phone conversations I had, I met him twice after I moved to Denmark. Once in 1999 before Christmas. And in 2007. He was the same person. Now, I relished the conversations I had with him over the past years when I called him at his now residence at Vasant Vihar. We’d talk about our days in Munirka and how we have to deal with the Tokas. How many times we’d have to move in a year, the crampy conditions. The heat. How we’d get our supply of drinks on Dry Days. The number of dogs we’d killed together. And even the time, and for the first time in Delhi - where we sold cooked dog meat to families from Lamka/NE. And we’d always laugh, made jokes of the hardships and turmoil we faced in the past. Very often, together. He never complaint.

And now as he lay six feet under - I knew I’d lost someone close to my heart. As he lay sick, back a few months ago I used to talk to him. Advise him to take this and that. Rest. What to eat. The importance of a good diet etc. He agreed to all my suggestions. But at the back of my mind I knew he will only do what he is programmed to do. Live life on his own terms. His own understanding and interpretation of it. I think he knew he was dying. But I also believed that he will go peacefully. With no regrets. For I know too well, that for a person like him to reach this far is but an accomplishment that I and many cannot contest. And the day before he passed on - me and my wife called yet again. He had slept. We asked his family to treat him real well and even suggested a new regiment of diet for him.The new diet - died with him the next day. Untried

'I did 'Rab Ne...' in the hope of doing a full-length role with Shah Rukh'

16 Jan, 2009 06:00 am ISTlIANS

Bipasha Basu, who abruptly left the shooting schedule of 'Lamhaa' in Kashmir last year, says she left in a huff because a certain security she had been promised wasn't provided at the location. "Too much was made out of the whole thing.'Lamhaa' is a difficult film. There was bound to be ups and downs. The producer and director knew why I left. A certain amount of security was promised. The first seven days were absolute chaos - nothing was organised and there was lack of security.

"Yes, my work is my life. But then I've a life beyond work. I'm not going to risk my life unnecessarily for any film. Who comes to hold your hand when you're in pain? Let's be practical," Bipasha told us. Bipasha has now returned to Kashmir to shoot for 'Lamhaa', with the assurance from the producer Bunty Walia and director Rahul Dholakia of beefed-up security.

After last year's incident, Bipasha's security is of special concern and her co-star Sanjay Dutt, in fact, proceeded to Kashmir a day ahead of her to ensure the atmosphere is conducive for the actress to resume shooting.

The actress, who starred in last year's first big hit 'Race', says she thoroughly, enjoyed her cameo in the song 'Phir milenge chalte chalte' in '‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’'. "It was like Mumtaz-meets-Sadhana. I loved it! I got a chance to work with Shah Rukh Khan, nothing else matters. Like millions, I had seen him on screen. Then I met him for a show and I was very impressed.

"I did 'Rab Ne...' in the hope of doing a full-length role with Shah Rukh and a film with Aditya Chopra. That one day of shooting with Shah Rukh was memorable. He's the nicest superstar I've ever met and irresistibly charming. This was my chance to dance." Bipasha hasn't signed any films after Dholakia's 'Lamhaa'.

"Before that I only have 'Aa Dekhe Zaraa' with Neil Nitin Mukesh. I just don't feel like signing anything until I'm convinced about it. With 'Lamhaa' it was an instant affinity to the role. And I love working with Rahul Dholakia. He's fun and funny. We've a strange equation," said Bipasha.

Katrina, Priyanka: Catfight!

Earlier this week we had reported that Kareena Kapoor had let the organisers of an awards event held last evening, down at the last minute. Kareena's exit created a one-and-a-half minute space. After some quick thinking the organisers asked Arjun Rampal to perform on a ‘Rock On’ number along with Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif, Bipasha Basu and Deepika Padukone, with Priyanka performing the grand finale.

THE RELATIONS BETWEEN RELIGIONS & ECONOMICS IN THELIGHT OF BUILDING JUST EQUAL SOCIETY IN INDIA
- Rev. Hangpi Manlun, B.A., B.D., M.Th.
INTRODUCTIONAlthough we are in the 21st Century our present economic condition remained relatively the same. In this study we will focus how did religion influences economic change. We will also discuss our present Indian situation and the factors of unequal society. And the relationship between religions and economics in the context of social changes necessary and important as it enables us to understand the implication of Church’s participation in social life of Indian Society. And also we will see how we shall address the present crisis as a church we will be the main theme of this paper.

1. MEANING AND DEFINITION: A. RELIGION The English word religion has a Latin root ‘religare’ meaning to bind together, which shows the social dimension of religion.**1 . The Hindi word ‘Dharma’ from the Sanskrit word ‘Dhree’, means ‘religion,’ ‘virtue,’ ‘quality,’ ‘function,’ ‘duty, and ‘opinion’.**2 . According to Christopher Dawson, “Religion is the word generally is to described man’s relation to divine or super human powers and the various organized system of belief and worship in which relations have been expressed.”**3 According to Emile Durkheim, “Religion is a unified system of belief and practices related to sacred things, i.e. to says things set apart and forbidden... It strengthens the unity of the groups and promotes social solidarity”.**4
B. ECONOMICS: Indeed, only during the last 200 yrs or so have we become accustomed to speak of the economy, even though the term was used as long as the fourth century BCE by Aristotle, to designate the relationship among members of the domestic households.**5 The French were the first who used the term economist. David L. Sills define economics as, the social science that deals with the ways which man & societies seek to satisfy their material needs and desire”.**6 C.S. Nagpal put economic clearly the economic as a social science helps us to understand how people tried to accommodate uncommon resources to their means.**7 Thus we can understand that economics as concern with wealth and specifically dealing with the means of managing scarce resources. 2. SOCIALOGICAL UNDERSTANDING OF THE RELATION BETWEEN RELIGION AND ECONOMICSThe relationship between Religion & Economics can be clearly understood when we studied the social changes, which took places in western societies. According to Francois, when a society becomes un able to reproduces itself as it was before and when elements of a new mode of production begin to supplement the old ones,”**8 the economics structure and dominions ethos of a society are shaped by region of that society, which remains as a major force.

Max Weber rightly say that Protestant ethics is the responsible for the rise of capitalism spirit The Protestant ethic emphasis that acquisition of wealth by one’s on labour is essentially the sign of prosperity here and here after. Therefore, it is the responsibility of every individual person to use reason, which is considered as the gift of God, and develop the fullest potential to acquire as much wealth as one can to glorify God.**9
But he further says that it acts as contributing factor, not the cause for the capitalism. Having discussed different view, we observe how religion affects economics behaviour.**103. HINDUISM & SOCIAL CHANGESAlthough we see so may undesirable practices in Hinduism. Here, we shall deal with some of the reformer social contribution for social change. As India poverty is a direct product of untouchability and castes taboos, the response to the challenge of poverty has to begin with the response to the challenge of untouchability. Basaveswara and several other saints always were eager to prove the folly of caste prejudices.**11 According to Jan Peter Schouten, “Casteism is not identical with Hinduism. The caste system is a social that is religiously legitimated, but religion is more than that.” **12 Vivekananda rightly pointed out that religion itself cannot be blamed for anything...but it is the Pharisees and Sadducees of Hinduism who invent all kinds of methods of oppressions...kick out the priests, who are always against progress, because they would never mind, their hearts would never become big.”**13
The Rama Krishna Movement has played a great significant role for social change in India. Swami Vivekananda (1862-1902) was the most brilliant reformer in the nineteenth century. He had a vision concerning for the misery of the poor masses. When he writes about his travel through India, he bursts out: “A country where millions of people live on flowers of the Mohua plants, and a million or two sadhus and a hundred million or so of Brahmins suck the blood out of their amelioration - is that country or hell? Is that a religion or the devil’s dance.”**14

He further said that, “we do stand in need of social reform. The necessary reforms are amelioration of the position of women. For him the most important means to achieve social change is education only by education it is possible to raise the Sudras to the level of the Brahmins.”**15 He also again said that we cannot give such education to people who are hungry, so he stresses constantly that the people must get enough food.

The other efforts of several great men of India and of movement like Arya Samaj, Brahma Samaj and Prarohana Samaj have been in this direction.4. ISLAMIC AND SOCIAL CHANGE:The Quranic prophets were part of the masses. The Quran describes the rulers and chieftains as arrogant oppression and the ruled masses as weakened oppressed masses had to fight against the mighty Pharaoh to liberate Israel. The Quran stands unambiguously with the weak in their struggle against oppressors.**16
Mecca was experiencing acute social tension when the prophet started preaching there. A powerful class of mercantile bourgeoisie accumulated wealth in their hands broke down the tribal structure and neglected the poor and needy. The prophet felt deeply stressed at this state of affairs and strongly condemned the arrogance of the Meccan rich. He also felt that poverty on a par with unbelief. Hence, war against poverty is an integral part of Islamic faith. The Islamic countries should also share their wealth with poorer sister nations like Bangladesh, if they are to practice Islamic justice fully.**17 Divine unity should reflect social unity and economic equality among the people of a nation as well as among nations. The Holy book ordained absolute equality of the rich and poor in the eyes of law and justice.**18 5. INDIAN ECONOMIC PLANNING:The Indian economic planning was commenced in 1951. In terms of objectives and targets it was very modest. Although this very plan was not based on any specific model, it was a remarkable success. The model for the second plan is called Nehru-Mahalanabis model, as it was jointly built by them. But unluckily this second five year plan did not perform according to designs of the model. This was basically due to the new colonial subordination by Indian political economy by the western capitalist forces.**19 By 1957 Indian political economy confronted a severe foreign exchange crisis.

In the history of Indian political economy 1970 was a memorable year. It was in this year the Government of India enacted the Indian Patent Act. This act was a severe blow to foreign capital and multinational corporations.**20 It enabled Indian capital to broaden its business horizon in India antagonistic to the interest of transnational corporations.

The country is now in the Ninth Five Year Plan. The Indian political economy failed to bring about any noticeable changes in property relations. The caste-cum-class character of Indian society is being perpetuated during the fifty years of freedom. Between the two eras, the situation of the poor has still worsened in the post-Nehruian period.

The former Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram says that, “The new economic policy did not give any benefit to the poorest 350 million people of India”**21 is evidence to this. The New Economic Policy and new marketisation policy opened the door for multinationals and foreign products simultaneously rising consumerism. Well, who buys them and who benefit? What have Revlon or Lewis jeans or Pepsi done to a common man? All these are luxurious to the poor, who live on minimum income. It is a direct contrast and paradoxical that while mega cities are planned, many beauty pageants are conducted. The population of slum or homeless number only keeps increasing. Who benefits?6. GLOBALISATION:The “Globalization” agenda brought officially into India during the Congress (I) rule at the centre in 1991 through the New Economic and Industrial Policy.**22 The Policy of Indian government adopting globalization and liberalization was for the development of Indian economy. According to S.P Gupta, “India was compelled to enter into global economy due to heavy internal and external depts.”**23 A recent survey indicates that one fifth of the world people living in the highest income countries dominate 82% of the world export market, the share of the bottom fifth is just one percent. Similarly they have 86% of the world GDP whereas the bottom fifth has only one percent. Globalization has also generated jobs and income insecurity, health insecurity, cultural insecurity, personal environment and community insecurity.**24 These are true especially in Indian society.

The opening of the economy to foreign investment and participation led to some clear but undisclosed and unadmitted realities, namely that market economy, that too globalized economy, could embrace only the top 20% of the population i.e., about 200 million, a staggering size for a newly emerging market. But what would happen to the remaining 800 million? of these are the lowest 200 million (20%) were social and economical outcastes of society.**25 The annual Indian budget provided some crumbs to this section.7. THE SITUATION OF OUR COUNTRY:Sri. C. Subramaniam, (Minister of Planning) said in 1970 in the parliament “over 34% of our people are out an existence of a sub human level with a per capita expenditure of less than Rs.15/- a month (less than 50 paisa a day) .Of these, a significant member live below the poverty line in conditions of chill penury and severe destitution with per capita expenditure of hardly Rs. 10/- per month. “P.D Ojha in his report on Indian poverty estimated the rural to be 70%.**26

Sri. Mohan Dharea (Minister) one declared that two-thirds of our populations are under the poverty level. These are not just numbers. They are people. Million of them. How can one live with just a rupee or as do most people, just 50 paisa per day? Imagine a family of six getting Rs. 100/- (or 50) per person per day) trying to live as human beings on that income in these hard days. Half of our population belongs to this category. Dalits, tribals are the worst affected people in this list.**27 Between March and June 1995, nineteen children belonging to poor tribal families in Dhule, Maharashtra died of starvation. Not far from godowns stocked to the roof with food grains. The families of the victims just could not access or afford that grain.**28 Six million tonness (60,00,000) of rice and wheat are almost rotting at the government owned Food Corporation of India (FCI) godowns all over India. The rainy months of October and November are going to spoil the food grains and so it means more grain in the godowns. But at the same time people in some.

Part of Orissa who could not get food, have eaten rotten decayed mango kernel and died. Some ate the decayed flesh of the exhumed body of the bull that was buried seven days earlier and 19 people were killed. The irony of the situation is, there is a FCI godown with surplus food grains just 80 Km away from the place where the tragedy had occurred. The what for is the surplus stocks of food grains? Who blocks the food grain when 280,000,000 people go to bed without one square meal a day?**29

The problem of all these are due to unequal distribution of income and resources. What Mahatma Gandhi’s observation was right, “there is enough in this world for everyone’s need, but not enough for everyone’s greed - is so true as it is today.”**30 The gap between the rich and the poor has always been there since the beginning of history, but today the gap is widening instead of closing. In India 85 percent of the total cultivable area has been redistributed. That is of 455 million acres, only 4.5 million have been distributed among the poor.**31 The top 10% of our population own 56% of all cultivable land. They also get one third of the one percent own more than half the total wealth in the form of shares.**32 A few affluent families control large sectors of the economy, be it land, industry, commerce or the widening of the gap between the rich and the poor are at the root of an unjust society in India.8. THE CHRISTIAN RESPONSE AND EVALUATION:The above given situation demands transformation of the existing socio-economic structure of the Indian society. Therefore, the basic question is how Christian would respond to this kind of exploitative situation? What should be the guiding principles to transform the unjust socio-economic structure? How does Jesus respond to the economic crisis of his days? Does he provide any model for transformation of economic structure to bring equality and liberation to the poor? If so can such model would be applicable to the present Indian context? Keeping all these questions in mind we shall discuss as follow.9. THE RESPONSE AND PRAXIS OF JESUS FOR THE TRANSFORMATION OF UNJUST SOCIO-ECONOMIC STRUCTURE(a) Kingdom Value: Leonardo Boff argues that Palestine was independent state suffering from the external (Roman) control; Jesus confronted this external force by preaching the kingdom of God that would usher in a new epoch of human liberation. Jesus chooses to identify himself with the poor, defending their rights and promising them a better day when God’s purpose would be consumed on this earth. **33 That means Jesus as he lives with the society, he does not keep himself aloof from problems of the people.

The kingdom of God is the central message of Jesus Christ (Mk.1:15). Jesus and the kingdom of God are inseparable, as Jesus himself is the bearer of the kingdom. The kingdom of God is now and future. On this account, Jurgen Moltmann has stated as follows:

It is experience in the companionship with Jesus where the sick are healed and the lost are found.... And poor discover their dignity, where people who have become rigid are fossilized come alive again, and old, tired life becomes young and fruitful...**34

According to Mohan Razu, the signs of the kingdom of God are life in all its fullness, the concern for community based on equality and mutual acceptance and freedom from seeking security..., Shalom means healing, wholeness and inclusive community. Jesus has translated these signs of the kingdom to the actual life situation of poverty, exploitation, injustice and oppression. The kingdom is thus characterized by equality, justice, freedom, human dignity, sharing and peace.**35 According to Gustavo Gutierrez Jesus death is the consequences of His struggle for justice, his proclamation of the kingdoms and his identification with the poor.**36 And for S.J Aloysius Pieris, in Jesus, God and the poor have made a covenant to fight their common enemy, mammon.**37

Wealth by itself is not evil, but it becomes evil when it is accumulated and misused. If wealth is distributed accordingly to the needs, then can be no needy person (Acts. 4:34-35), it ceases to be mammon. Jesus told the rich young men who was in search of eternal life to give up mammon in such a way that the poor would benefit by his renunciation (Mk.10:21). Lazarus remained hungry till his death, while the rich man refused to share even the excess foods and wasted it (Lk. 16:19-31). Poverty forced upon a brother or sister is an evil. Therefore, Jesus called the affluent to be poor so that there would be no poor.(b) Koinonia as Jesus New Economic Model:M. Douglas Meeks expressed that God is a community, the three person (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) share in common. There is no single notion of self expression, but is a relationship of self giving and sharing.**38 Luke recorded similar perspective in (Acts 2:44-470. The early Christian put this new economic order into practice, as they had become one body in Christ. The whole emphasizes within the community seemed to have been prompted by a sense of responsibility those who are socially deprived especially the widows (Acts 6:1). The aim is oneness, sharing of resources, people participation, justice, equality, sustainable socio-economic development.

The World Council of Churches Melbourne Conference affirm that, thus the gospel which has been given to Christian must express this continuing concern of God, for the poor to whom Jesus has granted the blessing of the kingdom. So the conference states clearly regarding the responsibility of the church as:

Poor and the hungry cry to God our prayer kingdom come must be prayed in solidarity with the cry millions who are living in poverty, injustice... The church cannot live distant from these faces because she sees the faces of Jesus ill them (Mt.25)... The goods news of the kingdom must be presented to the world by the church, the body of Christ, the sacrament of the kingdom in every place and time...**39

Lastly, one of the most important things is that the church should work with the people of other faiths, so that her mission can be fulfilled. As Dr. Godwin Shiri rightly pointed out that, “India is a multi-religious country... the task of development cannot be carried out in isolation from those who do not belong to our faith. Therefore, a sincere attempt for dialogue, both in concept and in action with people of other faith is vital.”**40 So that, we can promote humanization to liberate people from all constraints, bondage, dehumanization and bring a just society.

Congress bests BJP in ‘semi-final’ battle

Monday, 08 December , 2008, 21:27
New Delhi: In a crucial electoral contest ahead of the parliamentary elections early next year, India's ruling Congress on Monday bested the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in three out of five states that went to the polls in staggered elections that ended on December 4.
The Congress retained power for a record third five-year term in Delhi, wrested Mizoram and ousted the BJP in Rajasthan while losing to it decisively in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh in assembly elections that were the last popularity test ahead of the Lok Sabha battle.
Even as BJP supporters celebrated in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, party leaders admitted that the results were disappointing, especially the rout in Delhi, where they had been confident of ending 10 years of Congress rule, more so since voting in all states barring Chhattisgarh took place in the shadow of the Mumbai terror carnage.
General elections should not be advanced: Digvijay Singh
The outcome of the staggered elections between November 14 and December 4 sparked off speculation about early Lok Sabha elections, but Digvijay Singh of the Congress argued against it. BJP sources admitted that if they had won even three of the four northern states, they would have pressed for early parliamentary polls.
The Congress' most exciting victory came in Delhi where Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, 70, crushed the BJP, winning 40 seats in the 70-member house with results yet to be declared from four constituencies.
In Rajasthan's 200-member legislature, the Congress emerged the largest party winning 96 seats and was set to form the government taking help from among 25 independents including rebels from its own ranks.
And in north-eastern Mizoram, the Congress ended the Mizo National Front's (MNF) 10-year reign marred by corruption, sweeping 37 of the 40 assembly seats.
Sheila Dikshit thanks people for Congress victory
But the Congress was routed in Madhya Pradesh, where the BJP, led by Chief Minister Shivraj Chouhan, 50, bagged 140 of the 230 seats. In neighbouring Chhattisgarh, the BJP overcame hours of suspense during counting to emerge the winner with 50 seats in its kitty -- of the state legislature's 90.
Political analyst G V L Narasimha Rao, however, warned that there was no cause for cheer for the BJP or the Congress following the results.
"The Congress is certainly doing better than expected but not as well as they should have done to win a national election," Rao said. "The BJP is doing worse than expected and does not look like it is in the lead to come to power nationally."
But the Congress was buoyant. "There is no stopping the Congress now," claimed Congress leader M Veerappa Moily, a confidant of party president Sonia Gandhi.
'BJP got its answer for making terror a poll issue'
BJP leaders admitted privately that they would rethink their Lok Sabha strategy because the issue of terrorism they had raked against the Congress government of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh after the November 26 Mumbai terror attacks and the arrests of Hindu activists following the earlier Malegaon bombings had failed to pay dividends.
"We are going to analyse these results," a sombre BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said.
The biggest hero on Monday turned out to be Dikshit, a grandmother who became the first woman in India to lead a party to an assembly election victory for a third term.
As thousands gathered outside her residence shouting slogans, beating drums and bursting crackers, a beaming Dikshit flashed the V sign and declared: "The results are great!"
'Outsider' Sheila proves she is unmatched leader
Even Congress leaders who are normally used to hailing only Sonia Gandhi after every electoral victory gave due credit to Dikshit. "She has done a marvellous job," Moily said, echoing a popular sentiment.
In Rajasthan, BJP leaders blamed the loss on infighting in party ranks. But even as the Congress prepared to take power, all its chief ministerial hopefuls barring former chief minister Ashok Gehlot were defeated.
The Congress, too, blamed its loss in Chhattisgarh to factionalism in its ranks while analysts credited it to BJP Chief Minister Raman Singh and his "Mr Clean" image.
In Madhya Pradesh, BJP Chief Minister Shivraj Chouhan's popularity eclipsed the Congress, which projected Suresh Pachouri, who many saw as an "outsider", as the chief ministerial candidate.
KBM: Sify-Star News Elections Special
Also in Madhya Pradesh, former chief minister and Bharatiya Jan Shakti (BJS) founder president Uma Bharati lost from the Tikamgarh seat, her home turf.
Analyst Rao asked the BJP to read the writing on the wall ahead of the Lok Sabha polls due in April-May.
"The BJP will have to revise its strategy and come up with something instead of finding faults with the ruling party," he said. "But the result will set a momentum for the Lok Sabha elections."

Pakistan crackdown on banned outfits ‘continues’

Monday, 08 December , 2008, 23:50Last Updated: Tuesday, 09 December , 2008, 01:27
Islamabad/Washington: More than 24 hours after its security forces cracked down on the Laskhar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant group that India has blamed for the Mumbai attacks, Pakistan said late Monday that operations were on against "banned outfits and organisations" - and reiterated that it would not allow its soil to be used for terrorist activities.
"This is an intelligence-led operation against banned militant outfits and organisations. There have been arrests and investigations are on," a spokesman of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.
No details were provided but reports from Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-administered Kashmir, said LeT commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhwi and 19 other fighters have been arrested.
Mumbai terrror attacks: Pak arrests LeT commander
Pakistani security forces also sealed a camp of the Jamaat-ud-Dawa, as the LeT was renamed after it was proscribed, in the Shawai Nullah neighbourhood of Muzaffarabad, the reports said.
Indian and US intelligence officials say that the LeT was involved in the Mumbai attacks that claimed 172 lives and left nearly 250 injured.
Meanwhile, the Defence Committee of the Cabinet (DCC) that met here on Monday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani, reiterated Pakistan's resolve not to allow its soil to be used for any kind of terrorist activity anywhere in the region and in the world, Online news agency reported.
Sources said the meeting was convened to review the overall security situation in the country after the Mumbai attacks, Pakistan-India tensions and others matters.
Cabinet ministers Sherry Rehman, Ahmed Mukhtar, Rehman Malik and Muhammad Ali Durrani, Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee chairman Gen Tariq Majeed, ISI head Lt Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha were among those who attended the meeting.
LeT chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed reacted angrily to the raids against his organisation, saying the operation was being conducted "under Indian pressure" and was "unwarranted". Talking to Geo News, Saeed said that the targeting of Kashmiri organisations "without any proof" was an "expression of weakness".
As the US stepped up pressure, security forces on Sunday "launched a 'quiet' crackdown on activists belonging to the banned jihadi outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba in different parts of the country and Azad Jammu and Kashmir," Dawn newspaper said on Monday.
There are reports that similar action is being planned in some cities and towns of Punjab province.
"It is believed that the action taken by Pakistan against the Lashkar-e-Toiba will defuse to some extent the growing tension between the two neighbours," Dawn said.
Pak rejects India's demand to hand over Dawood
Muzaffarabad residents said they had seen army personnel taking control of the area along Shawai Nullah, some five km northwest of Muzaffarabad, where Jamaat-ud-Dawa possesses a large plot of land on which several buildings have been built.
"The Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) of Hafiz Saeed occupied the same place before the organisation was proscribed," Dawn said.
"I saw an army helicopter hovering over the area and around 5 pm. I heard two or three loud explosions," a woman who lives in the area told the newspaper by the telephone.
Another person said: "The helicopter may have airlifted people detained or injured during the operation."
There were unconfirmed reports of an exchange of fire.

In Washington, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice reiterated that "non-state actors" acting from Pakistan's territory were still its responsibility.
"I think there's no doubt that Pakistani territory was used by probably non-state actors," she said in interviews with US television networks on Sunday though she did not "think that there is compelling evidence of involvement of Pakistani officials."
Appearing on CNN, Rice said: "I do think that Pakistan has a responsibility to act, and it doesn't matter that they're non-state actors."
With Islamabad's ties with Washington as well as with India at stake, Pakistan must take action against the militants, Rice said. "The key here is that this investigation needs to go forward. It needs to be transparent," she added.
Asked to clarify her use of the he word "probably," Rice said: "I think that the evidence is that the terrorists did use territory in Pakistan."
Pakistan won’t send officials till proof provided
But she declined to say whether the terrorists trained in Pakistan or if they had any cooperation or if she believed that the LeT responsible for the Mumbai assault.
Asked about the relationship between LeT and the Pakistani government or its intelligence or military services, Rice said: "Well, there have been historic ties. There's no doubt about that."
In a separate report on Monday, headlined "Pak plan to mend fences with India", Dawn said: "Pakistan is sending an important message to the Indian leadership this week pertaining to the heightening of tension between the two nuclear neighbours."

THAT ARC PINE TREE!

SAMUEL SAMTE, NEW DELHI
“Many a time, we are misled by our greedy and selfish instinct. We often misjudge and misinterpret things at our own conveniences.”t was a windy afternoon in ARC, Shillong in 2005. I was going to a friend who had come to visit Shillong. As I reached close to ARC Taxi Stand, a huge Pine tree fell across the road. Bang!!! A speeding military truck collided with a car due to the blockade! Two people from the car died and a jawan seriously injured. People flocked all of a sudden while I try to recollect the incident. My inner self tells me “what a bad day for the men in car!”, “what a bad luck!” It never came into my mind that I got a second life and that I was lucky to be unharmed, at just a metre away from the spot. Seeing me standing there, everybody exclaimed that I was lucky.

Although I didn’t view the incident as anything but sheer chance, I nodded out the courtesy. Deep down, I didn’t feel any gratitude and thus quickly diverted the conversation to the cause of the uprooting, blaming callousness of the authorities.

When I narrated the incident to my visiting friend, he too suggested that I was lucky. He even embraced me and kissed me! Wait, “there is nothing special about it. I wasn’t destined to be under the tree today” I said.

Now three years past that incident had happened, I can still remember my calm and composure on that day.

Months later, a youth get together function was held at Laitmukhrah, near St. Anthony’s College. Apart from the food and entertainment, there was a special session wherein a lucky participant could win a prize. The organizer would pick a slip from a jar and read aloud the name of an item written there. Whoever produce the thing first, won a prize. “Get me a one rupee note and I pay Rs. 500”, announced a staff. My joy knew no bound. For I had a new one rupee note always kept in my wallet (I don’t know why) those days. I was a bit nervous. I asked myself “Are they serious”, etc. As I slowly reached for my wallet, someone else form the crowd hurriedly passed a one rupee note and claimed the prize before me. Believe me, I was red! I was inconsolable. For the rest of the day, my thoughts stayed rooted on the missed prize. ‘I would have won’. ‘I should have it.’ As everyone would put it, it was sheer bad luck. What a bad luck that I missed it by just a couple of seconds.

Then suddenly, I gained my conscious and recalled the incident at ARC. Where was the calm and composure that I had taken so much pride in that day? Did it exist only when things worked out in my favor? I could accept good fortune as a matter of destiny and brush it aside. Why is it then that I couldn’t accept bad luck too with the same intensity or equanimity?

I realized that while I look the good things that happened for granted, I grieved disproportionately when things didn’t go as I wished.

Later that evening, I was so to say at my best self. That grief and regret changed into joy! For from that moment I could maintain a balance between “good luck” and “bad luck”. Whenever disappointment comes, I quickly make a list of the times I have been lucky. If the Pipal tree is significant for Gautama Buddha, for me, it is the Pine tree at ARC!

Govt approves Sixth Pay Commission report

NEW DELHI: The government on Thursday approved the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations, heaping civil and defence staff with a salary hike bonanza on the eve of the country's 61st Independence Day.
According to Information and Broadcast Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi, the revised pay scales will take effect from January 1, 2006.
He added that arrears will be paid in two installments, 40 per cent this fiscal and 60 per cent in the next financial year.
Approving the recommendations with slight modification, Dasmunsi said that the new system includes four pay bands and the mid-level officers have been placed in the highest pay band.
The minimum entry level pay has been raised to Rs 7,000 from Rs 6,660 per month recommended by the Commission. The minister also added that special allowances will be provided to Army commandoes and their Naval and Air Force equivalents.
The Sixth Pay Commission, headed by Justice B N Srikrishna, had in March submitted its report to the government, recommending an average 28 per cent hike for central government staff and defence personnel.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday held a meeting with External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Defence Minister A K Antony and Finance Minister P Chidambaram to discuss the pay commission report and the recommendations of the empowered committee of Secretaries that went into it.
The pay round comes roughly once a decade and the previous one in 1997 raised salaries for federal employees by nearly 40 per cent, prompting many state governments to follow suit and blowing the combined state and federal deficit to nearly 10 per cent of GDP.Source:

Anjali, Avneet out of 50 m rifle 3-position

Indian shooters Anjali Bhagwat and Avneet Kaur Sidhu were knocked out of the women's 50 metre Rifle 3 position qualification round at the Olympics Games in Beijing on Thursday.
Anjali finished a poor 32nd, logging in 571 points (9.517 average) while Avneet totalled 552 points (9.200 average), finishing a dismal 42nd out of 43 competitors at the Beijing Shooting Range Hall.
Chinese Li Du qualified at the top with an Olympic record of 589

Bindras rifle was tampered with: coach

From Rajeev K, DH News Service, Beijing:
Did someone tamper with Abhinav Bindras rifle just before the Indian started his gold medal round on Monday?
Bindra, who won the gold medal, certainly believes so. So do other Indian shooting officials. Bindra, who left for India on Wednesday, told a Mumbai-based newspaper that he felt his weapon was tampered with.
The shooter said he was surprised that his sight was not at the same level as it was during the qualification round. He became suspicious after he registered a very low score in the sighter series just before the final and had to make adjustments to get the rifle in order.
“He shot a 4.2 in the first sighter series and I was surprised by it,” national coach Sunny Thomas told Deccan Herald on Wednesday.

“He had shot 60 shots in the qualifying rounds and out of which, 56 were 10s and only four were nines. Unless someone had tampered with the rifle, it was impossible for him to shoot a 4.2,” he said.
“He then gave a click and things started to improve. Subsequently, he had to give 40 clicks to set it right. Unless someone has taken out the sight and put it back, it is not possible for such a thing to happen,” Thomas said.He suggested that it might have happened during the one-hour 15 minutes break between the qualification round and the final.
During the period, the weapon check has to be done.
Abhinav had gone to the toilet leaving his rifle in the room; there were other shooters, their coaches and Indian coach Laszlo Szucsak in that room. That was the only time he left his weapon alone between qualification and the final, Thomas said while praising Bindra’s presence of mind for coming out of the tight situation.
“I was really worried that something like Athens might happen again (Bindra finished seventh then due to an unstable surface at his firing station). But he had the presence of mind to set things right. He won the gold medal, so we decided not to make an issue out of it.”
